I just finished watching The Pacific and it was fantastic. It basically follows a bunch of marines over the Pacific campaign against Japan. Highly recommended and I learned two things for certain:
1. I am so glad I didn’t have to fight in the Pacific campaign.
2. I hope I never have to fight against the Japanese or anyone in a Pacific campaign or anything in southest Asia.
Great mini series, please go watch it if you love history. Sad/interesting ending as it goes over all the guys who served and where they ended up.
The last few months have been crazy busy but I managed to find time to go camping the last two weekends.
I’m not sure where we camped last weekend but it was next to a stream and pretty, I spent most of the day building a dam to try to show up the beavers next door. And the next day we climbed Grays and Torres (two 14,000 foot mountains). Which only reinforced my belief that air at sea level deserves an award. And I also got to setup my new tent for the first time, super comfortable even for a tall person.
And this weekend Joel, Laura, and I drove up to Crested Butte for a one day hat tournament. Crested Butte and surrounding area is the most beautiful I’ve seen in Colorado and so much nicer then Frisco/Breck/Etc. I couldn’t play the tournament as my ankle is still swollen but I did go for a nice 14 mile run/hike. And the next day we did another short hike, relaxed, and hung out with Chappe and Liz in Aspen at their new place (which is awesome). Great weekend and had a great time!
And I spent tonight setting up my new desk, it moves up and down so I can work standing up and sitting down. Pretty excited as it is a lot easier for me to get things done when I’m standing up.
JetBlue is selling a All You Can Jet pass where you can fly as much as you want from September 7th to October 6th so I bought the pass for $699 (meaning I can travel any day of the week during that period)!
It is good for any domestic locations and international only has taxes and fees that you have to pay. I won’t be able to plan things out until they let you book on August 23rd but I’m pretty excited. This will get me to regionals in California, a trip to Florida to visit my Grandma, and hopefully a few more. If international is cheap enough I might try to bounce around the Caribbean. Especially as I really want to go see Tobago as that is where they filmed Swiss Family Robinsons. And if I can make it too Barbados it is only $89 round trip to get to Tobago. And I’d love to go back to St. Lucia.
I am excited as in a few weeks I’m getting a new desk that adjust so I can work standing up or sitting down. I really like working standing up as it feels more focused and I seem to get more project based assignments done. At our old apartment we had a counter in the kitchen that was tall enough I could work standing up and I spent a few weeks working from there. And after that I decided I wanted to make the change. Standing up is supposed to have quite a few health benefits too, here are a few articles on it:
ETA to the new desk’s arrival is about two weeks and I’ll post how it goes then. I’m going to use the old desk as a work area in our upstairs living room for Joel and I.
Inspired by books and blog entries about living simply, Ms. Strobel and her husband, Logan Smith, both 31, began donating some of their belongings to charity. As the months passed, out went stacks of sweaters, shoes, books, pots and pans, even the television after a trial separation during which it was relegated to a closet. Eventually, they got rid of their cars, too. Emboldened by a Web site that challenges consumers to live with just 100 personal items, Ms. Strobel winnowed down her wardrobe and toiletries to precisely that number.
It’s a great article and the rest gets even better!
Here is my page on the 100 Personal Item’s Challenge and my progress. I’ll be curious to even see how much stuff I have!
Still super busy so can’t post much but I highly recommend this article on how to grow rich using a charter city idea. Very cool idea built on it’s success in history.
I saw this yesterday and highly recommend it, creepy as hell but very entertaining. Similar to the Matrix in a lot of ways and the best movie since the first Matrix. I’d give it 4.5 out of 5 stars and it deserves 4 stars just for showing that you can make an original movie even if it is a big budget movie.
Well today is the World Cup final and hopefully tomorrow I’m going on a hike/drive out to Cape Point and then flying to Ireland on Tuesday and then Denver a few days later. The games have been amazing and Cape Town very friendly. South Africa has a lot of possibilities and an amazing population, but also a lot of challenges, hopefully they are able to overcome them! I’ll be rooting for them!
I went surfing for the first time last week which was awesome, it was way easier then snow boarding and caught my first wave in the first 2.5 hours (good instructor too). I fell on the other 50 waves but falling is almost as fun when the bottom is sandy. The waves picked up the second half of the day and after getting hammered a few times and after my feet went numb I switched to a boogie board. Fun day and going to try to spend an entire week learning to surf at some point soon (some place with warmer water). They had a very nice shark warning flag system too, really makes you feel safe… Also, wet suits are awesome and make you feel like a ninja.
Yesterday we went to the Cape Town aquarium which was awesome, I love aquariums. Then ate all you can eat sushi with some friends and watched the third place game. Good night!
And, I’m so glad Uruguay lost again, Suarez tried his best to drive and cheat and ruin the spirit of the game further against the German, I hope Karma’s cold grip haunts him the rest of his life.
In the game tonight it was Uruguay versus Ghana, in the final moments of overtime Ghana scores a header and a Uruguay player purposeful blocks it from going in with his hand. He was red carded, but Ghana missed the point after and subsequently lost.
Uruguay should have done the right thing and purposely missed all their penalty kicks or had the goalie stand away from the goal for the PK.
They are are bunch of cheaters with no honor and I make a solemn vow to always cheer AGAINST Uruguay. No matter whether it is in sport, economics, or politics. Until they make this wrong right.
If I visit their country (which I hopefully never will), I will pretend it is part of Brazil or refer to it as “Cheater-Land”, I will compare it to the worst third world countries I can when talking to locals, I will off handily remark about how surprised I was that it smelled so bad here, or how surprised I am that their country made it out of the stone age, and that I didn’t think babies could be that ugly, I will do all I can to encourage an oppressive military junta to take it over, and I will constantly refer to how weird it is they play soccer with their hands when the rest of the world plays it with their feet…
If the USA team had done similar I would say the same thing and go to games just to boo them! Disgusting disgusting play by Uruguay and I hope Karma destroys them.
Fuck you Uruguay “soccer” team. Ghana is better then you!
I’ve been a bit under the weather the last few days, but rallied today and ran and climbed Lion’s Head. Long steep climb but pretty fun and awesome view from the top.
We are going to Gordon’s beach tomorrow, no games for a few days. We have one game left, a quarter final in cape town! We saw Spain versus Portugal Tuesday and it was clear Spain was far better. Fantastic ref too for not calling fouls on any of their sissy diving shit (the 9th circle of hell is reserved for divers according to my interpretation of Dante’s work).
My brother referred me to Hypem.com a while back and I decided to post a short recommendation here as it is the best resource for finding awesome new music no matter what you like!
Basically it takes music blogs that are popular and pulls in any songs they post and then people can vote on them in a variety of ways. So what you end up with is a page with the most popular, the latest submitted, and the most popular from mentions on twitter.
The music tends to be a lot of rap and techno (I like techno oriented), but you also get a variety of others too and I really recommend just playing down the page and seeing what you like. I’ve found all my new favorites this year through this website. Highly recommended!
This is bwb’s personal blog so he can spout random nonsensical bullshit. Plus family and friends can track the digital nomad and what he is doing.
I am a pretty simple. I love Mangos. I love the beach, although mostly at sunset as I’m a ginger. I strongly believe the most desirable women in the world is Meg Ryan, followed closely by StarBuck of BSG. Some people find this questionable but I feel sad for them. I love to travel, eat exotic food, read, and use my imagination. I like business ideas, understanding how businesses work, and building cool new things.
